Empire Magazine has released a pair of new Black Widow covers highlighting Scarlett Johansson’s white costume in the movie. In the ten years since her introduction to the MCU in 2010’s Iron Man 2, Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff has typically worn some variation of a black suit into combat. It’s not just a fashion choice or a reflection of her superhero name either; her classic black costume serves a tactical purpose, allowing her to specialize in stealth and readily blend in with her surroundings while out in the field. However, since her solo movie follows her on a more personal mission that takes her back to her former stomping grounds in, by the look of it, Eastern Europe and Russia, Natasha is going to be changing things up a bit.
Indeed, the TV spots and trailers for Black Widow have teased the character swapping out her black duds for a white suit, in order to stand out less while she’s running around on a mission in an as-yet unknown, but clearly very snowy, location in the film. The outfit was introduced to the Marvel Comics universe back in 2010’s Black Widow: ᴅᴇᴀᴅly Origin series, but this is the first time Natasha’s donned it in the MCU. It looks pretty cool too, judging by the latest promotional material for the film.
For their upcoming May issue, Empire Magazine has unveiled a pair of Black Widow covers, including one that spotlights Natasha’s white costume. You can check it out below, followed by the second cover (which features an illustration of Natasha in her black suit by Empire’s Jen Bartel).
Obviously, these Black Widow covers were put together before the recent wave of late March and April movie delays announced in reaction to the coronavirus outbreak. Just yesterday, in fact, Disney pulled The New Mutants (“The final X-Men movie” mentioned on the cover with Natasha’s white outfit) from its release slate, along with its live-action Mulan retelling and the Searchlight Pictures horror film Antlers. For the time being, though, Black Widow is staying exactly where it’s at in early May. In fact, Disney has yet to indicate they’re planning to shift the movie at all, having barely unveiled the final Black Widow trailer this past week. Still, as more and more films and TV shows are either put on hold or pushed back, that may end up changing in the near future
Until then, this glimpse of Natasha’s white costume gives everyone something to look forward to in a little under two months from now. Directed by Cate Shortland (Berlin Syndrome) from a script credited to Eric Pearson (Agent Carter) and story by Ned Benson (The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby) and Jac Schaeffer (Olaf’s Frozen Adventure), Black Widow certainly has the potential to kick-off Phase 4 of the MCU in style. Picking up before Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, the movie could also provide Natasha’s story with a stronger ending than the one she got by sacrificing her life to retrieve the Soul Stone in Endgame (and Johansson’s time playing in the MCU along with it). At the very least, it’s sure to give her one final sick suit to wear before she bows out.
