Khloé Kardashian just turned 40—and she celebrated the milestone birthday with a hair transformation that saw her switching her red-turned-strawberry-blonde hair for a dark chocolate-brown brunette. Kardashian celebrated her big day on June 27 and commemorated the day with an Instagram roundup that showed off her deeper hair color. The new shade includes lighter-color highlights and maintains her usual super-long length.

On Snapchat, Kardashian offered a little more insight into the change, saying that it was simply too much work to maintain her lighter color.

“Okay, so I colored my hair again,” she said. “My hair was red for, I don’t know, like a month or so I would say…and as much as I love red, every single time you wash it, it comes out, it fades color. Towards the end, my hair was, like, honey, maybe strawberry, very light strawberry blonde.”
