Jonathan Glazer being behind the camera, Scarlett Johansson in front of it, and stark black and white pH๏τography giving us an intimate glimpse at slices of performative humanity, this latest spot is not a sequel to 2013’s mind-bending feature Under The Skin.
Academy director has created a disorientating study of an actor’s preparation and process; filling the screen with Johansson’s face as she delivers line readings out of context.
Ostensibly to promote Prada’s
Galleria Handbag (and giving us a nice look at it as the star takes her taxi home), this striking film is more of an artistic exercise than a straightforward spot, but in the hands of someone like Glazer even the slightest of concepts can become a noteworthy endeavour.
