“What if…?” is a question every fandom asks. However, in the Jurᴀssic Park series, Universal explored what if John Hammond had a second chance.
While plot details for the upcoming Jurᴀssic World installment are currently under wraps, the film is rumored to be тιтled Jurᴀssic City. David Koepp, the original screenwriter for Jurᴀssic Park, is penning the script. Steven Spielberg has signed on as an executive producer for Amblin Entertainment along with Marshall. With the new movie serving as a franchise reset, none of the characters from previous installments are expected to return.
The Jurᴀssic Park Franchise Has Had Varied Success
While the Jurᴀssic World movies may not have garnered the same critical acclaim as Spielberg’s original 1993 masterpiece, they have been mᴀssive commercial successes. Jurᴀssic World, Jurᴀssic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Jurᴀssic World: Dominion each grossed over a billion dollars at the global box office. However, Dominion is considered a low point in the franchise, with a 29% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It also received three Golden Raspberry Award nominations.
The Jurᴀssic Park franchise is inspired by Michael Crichton’s 1990 novel of the same name. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the first film was released in 1993 and became a cultural phenomenon. The franchise is primarily centered around genetically engineered dinosaurs being brought back to life through cloning technology, set within various theme parks and islands.
As a new Jurᴀssic World movie begins development, it posits where it can go and if it will address some of the series’ most important characters.
The first installment follows a group of scientists and two children who are invited to preview a new theme park populated by dinosaurs. When the park’s security systems fail, the dinosaurs escape, and the humans struggle to survive. After the groundbreaking success of the original Jurᴀssic Park film, the franchise continued with The Lost World: Jurᴀssic Park (1997) and Jurᴀssic Park III (2001).
In 2015, the franchise was revived with Jurᴀssic World from director Colin Trevorrow. Set years after the events of the original trilogy, the story introduces a fully operational dinosaur theme park on Isla Nublar. When a genetically modified dinosaur escapes, the park goes into crisis mode. The movie was followed by two sequels, Jurᴀssic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) and Jurᴀssic World: Dominion (2022).
Jurᴀssic World 4 opens in theaters worldwide on July 2, 2025.
