Former pro golfer turned influencer Paige Spiranac is no stranger to controversy. Her supposedly unconventional golf outfits have earned her both fans and detractors, but the 30-year-old refuses to give into the hate. On the contrary, she regularly trolls those who don’t take her seriously for wearing athleisure on the links, as if that somehow has anything to do with her golf skills.
Case in point, Spiranac posted a video to Instagram this week wearing a spandex dress that left little to the imagination while pretending to have little grasp on the sport. “How people think I play lol,” she captioned the short video.
“I’m not very good at golf, let me just tee it up,” she said, pretending to struggle while bending down in the super-short dress, which for what it’s worth, appears to have shorts underneath. “I mean how do I even hold this thing, I don’t know!” She then pretended to whiff the ball, before eventually making contact.
“Did you see that! It went 10 whole yards!” she exclaimed in a bubbly voice while jumping up and down.
Spiranac has been open about how she deals with criticism. And in fact, as a former childhood gymnast, she has said that she wears the outfits she does to feel comfortable, not necessarily to attract attention.
“When I first started doing this I wanted to be taken seriously as a professional golfer, and no matter what I did or what I posted, I’d get hate,” she explained on the on the Twin Talk podcast last October. “And there was one time where I wore a full turtleneck, leggings, I was completely covered from head to toe, and people were upset with my outfit.”
“And I was like, ‘OK well clearly, no matter what I wear or what I do, people are going to be upset about it,'” Spiranac continued. “So, I might as well wear what I want and live the life that I want to live, and I have always dressed a very certain way and I think it comes from my gymnastics background of being very comfortable in literally almost nothing.”
“And so … I just said, ‘OK, well I’m just going to do what I want to do, and I’m going wear what I want to wear, and if people like it, great and if they dislike it, OK great,'” she added.
