Scarlett Johansson Says It Would Be a ‘Miracle’ for Black Widow to Return to the MCU: ‘But Who Knows?’

The actress previously said she “has no plans to return as” the ᴀssᴀssin-turned-Avenger, who seemingly takes her final bow in 2021’s ‘Black Widow’

Have Marvel fans really seen the last of Black Widow? Never say never, according to Scarlett Johansson.

During a Monday appearance on the Today show to promote her skincare line The Outset, the 38-year-old actress coyly addressed speculation that she might return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as her superhero character.

“I think it was the end, right? … She pᴀssed,” Johansson told Savannah Guthrie, referencing the scene in Avengers: Endgame when Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow sacrifices herself to obtain the Soul Stone from Thanos, sparing the life of Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton/Hawkeye.

“It would be a miracle. It would be a real Marvel miracle. It would be a marvel. But who knows?” the actress quipped in her chat with Guthrie, 51.

Scarlett Johansson Calls End of ‘Black Widow’ Role ‘Bittersweet’: ‘I’ve Had An Incredible Decade’

Johansson was similarly vague while chatting with a wider group of co-anchors on the show, when Al Roker asked about the rumors, citing the Marvel “multiverse” as a potential loophole.

“Is it like, a vampire version of the character? ‘Cause I’m here for that. Or like a zombie version, maybe?” she said, playfully avoiding directly answering Roker, 69, after he asked whether she’d been approached by Marvel Studios to reprise her role.

Johansson first played Black Widow in 2010’s Iron Man 2, and went on to appear as the character in several follow-up films including The Avengers (2012) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014).

And while the character died in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, she made a leading appearance once again in 2021’s Black Widow standalone film, which takes place after the events of Captain America: Civil War (2016).

Back in July 2021, Johansson told Fatherly that she “has no plans to return as” the ᴀssᴀssin-turned-Avenger, who seemingly takes her final bow in Black Widow.

“I feel really satisfied with this film,” she said. “It feels like a great way to go out for this chapter of my Marvel idenтιтy.”

That doesn’t mean we won’t see the two-time Academy Award nominee around the MCU at all, though.

“I would love to be able to continue to collaborate with Marvel in other ways because I think there’s just an incredible wealth of stories there,” she said. “Re-imagining this genre is something that I find very interesting.”
